Lee and Sunisa’s mother, Yeev Thoj, moved from Laos to the United States, where they met. Many Hmong were allies of the United States during the Vietnam War (1957-1975), leaving the region after the war ended. Sunisa Lee began training in gymnastics at the age of 6.
