Momoa, Jason (1979-…), is an American actor. Momoa is best known for such action roles as the warlord Khal Drogo in the epic fantasy television series “Game of Thrones” (2011-2019) and as the superhero Aquaman in several films.
Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa was born on Aug. 1, 1979, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Momoa is of European and Polynesian ancestry. When his parents divorced soon after his birth, Momoa moved to Norwalk, Iowa, with his mother.
As a teenager, Momoa lived with his father in Hawaii each summer. In 1999, Momoa successfully auditioned for a role on the television series “Baywatch” (1989-2001) as a lifeguard.
After the end of “Baywatch,” Momoa moved to Los Angeles to continue acting. He appeared in several television series, such as the romantic drama “North Shore” (2004-2005) and the science fiction series “Stargate: Atlantis” (2004-2009). In 2011, Momoa starred as the warlord Conan in the film Conan the Barbarian, his biggest role until his appearance in the first season of “Game of Thrones.”
In 2014, Momoa secured the role of Aquaman in the DC Comics superhero films. He briefly appeared as Aquaman in the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, his character played a more significant part in Justice League (2017) and was the star of Aquaman (2018) and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023).
Around the same time as his DC Comics film appearances, Momoa played leading roles in the historical drama “Frontier” (2016-2018) and the dystopian series “See” (2019-2022). He also played the hero Duncan Idaho in the science fiction film Dune (2021) and the villain Dante in the action film Fast X (2023).
In addition to his acting career, Momoa has also participated in philanthropy (charity work) focused on environmental issues.
