Oh, Sandra

Oh, Sandra (1971-…), is a Canadian American actress. She is best known for her work on the medical drama television series “Grey’s Anatomy,” which debuted in 2005. Oh also played the role of an assistant on the comedy series “Arliss” (1996-2002) and has done voice work for a variety of projects.

Sandra Miju Oh was born on July 20, 1971, in Nepean, Ontario (now a part of Ottawa) to South Korean immigrants. Oh grew up in the Ottawa region and began acting at a young age. From 1990 to 1993, Oh attended the National Theatre School in Montreal, Quebec.

Oh’s breakout role was a teenage runaway in the biographical television film The Diary of Evelyn Lau (1994). After Evelyn Lau, Oh appeared in several Canadian films, including a well-reviewed role in Double Happiness (1994).

Relocating to the United States to continue her career, Oh secured a role in the HBO comedy series “Arliss.” Oh then played supporting roles in the films The Princess Diaries (2001), Under the Tuscan Sun (2003), and Sideways (2004).

In 2005, Oh was cast as Cristina Yang, a doctor on the medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy.” For her role as a supporting actress in that series, Oh won a Golden Globe award in 2006. Oh played the role of Yang until 2014.

In 2019, Oh won a Golden Globe award for best television actress in a drama series for her role as an investigator in the BBC’s “Killing Eve” from 2018 to 2022. In 2022, Oh voiced the mother of the main character in the animated film Turning Red.
