Mid Ulster is a local government district in central Northern Ireland, west of Lough Neagh (Lake Neagh). County Monaghan, in the Republic of Ireland, lies to the south. At the time of the 2021 census, the district’s population was 150,293. The district covers an area of 704 square miles (1,823 square kilometers). The towns of Cookstown, Dungannon, and Magherafelt all host government offices.
The area surrounding Magherafelt lies in the northern part of the district. The area is known for its beautiful scenery and fishing streams. Ballyronan, on Lough Neagh, has a marina. Beef and dairy cattle are important throughout the district. Sand and gravel are quarried In the south, near Dungannon.
Most of the workers in Mid Ulster are employed in service industries, which include education, health care, government services, finance and real estate, hotels and restaurants, and retail and wholesale trade. The construction and manufacturing industries also employ many people. Mid Ulster’s many factories make meat and dairy products, bricks and cement, heavy machinery, and other equipment.
Most of the Mid Ulster district lies in the former County Tyrone. Smaller parts of the district were once part of the traditional counties of Armagh and Londonderry. The counties ceased to be used as administrative areas In 1973, and local government was divided into smaller districts. In 2015, during another reorganization of local government, the Dungannon and South Tyrone, Cookstown, and Magherafelt districts were combined to form the Mid Ulster local government district.
