Fowler, Mary

Fowler, Mary (2003-…), is an Australian soccer star. Fowler, a forward, is best known for her goal-scoring ability. She represented Australia in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023. FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association (International Federation of Association Football). FIFA is soccer’s world governing body. Soccer is called football in much of the world. Fowler’s strong performance during the 2023 World Cup, which was hosted by Australia, her home country, brought her to national attention.

In 2019, Fowler signed with Adelaide United, a W-League team based in Adelaide, in the Australian state of South Australia. The W-League, the top women’s soccer league in Australia, is now called the A-League. Fowler made her debut in the league during the 2019-2020 season. In 2020, she moved to France to play for Montpellier Hérault Sport Club, a team in France’s top women’s soccer league. In 2022, Fowler signed with Manchester City Women’s Football Club, a team in the Football Association Women’s Super League in the United Kingdom.

Mary Boio Fowler was born on Feb. 14, 2003, in Cairns, in the Australian state of Queensland. She began playing soccer at the age of 7. When Fowler was 11 years old, her family moved to the Netherlands. Growing up, she played in various junior soccer leagues in Australia and the Netherlands. Through her parents, Fowler has Irish and Papua New Guinean ancestry. Her sister, Ciara Fowler, also became a professional soccer player. As teenagers, Mary and Ciara both trained with the Irish national soccer team. They also played together for Adelaide United.

At age 15, Mary Fowler joined the Australian national women’s team, known as the Matildas. She played her first international match in 2018. In 2019, Fowler joined the Matildas for her first FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament. However, she was not selected to play during the tournament.

Fowler made her Olympic debut at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, representing Australia. The 2020 Olympics were held in 2021, due to the global outbreak of the disease COVID-19. Fowler was also selected to play for the Matildas at the 2024 Summer Olympics, held in Paris, France.
